What Residents and Families Have Shared

CL

Mrs. Chan Lai-Yee

Daughter of resident — Mid-Levels, HK

My mother was nervous about the move for many months before we finally visited Tin Lok. What won her over — what I had not expected — was the afternoon tea. She came back from that first visit talking about the lo mai gai, not about rooms or fees. She has been there just over a year now and I think she is genuinely more content than she was living alone.

Mr. Wong Kwok-Hung

Son of resident — Kowloon Tong, HK

The fees are what we expected — clearly explained from the first call, which is not always the case with senior residences. My father is on the full comfort arrangement and the housekeeping is genuinely done properly, not just a wipe around. The staff member assigned to him remembered that he dislikes the television room and suggested the reading corner instead. That kind of attention matters when you're eighty-three.

Ms. Lee Ming-Fong

Daughter of resident — Wan Chai, HK

I was worried that the Peak location would feel remote, but in practice it has been the opposite — the garden air and the views have lifted my mother's spirits considerably. She told me that watching the clouds come in over the hills in the morning has become something she waits for. I would not have predicted that.

Mr. Tam Hei-Man

Son of resident — Sai Kung, HK

We chose the dining arrangement first, not the full package — my father wanted to keep his own flat but was struggling to cook. Three months in, he asked whether we could look at the full residence option. That was our measure of success; he wanted to move in more fully. The staff had made him feel at home at meals, and he wanted that to be his whole day.

Ms. Yuen Fung-Yi

Niece of resident — Tsuen Wan, HK

My aunt is very particular about food — she was a cook herself for thirty years. I was anxious about whether she would accept the kitchen here. She has not only accepted it; she has given them suggestions, and they have actually tried some of them. The head of dining seems to genuinely enjoy that conversation. The plum blossom courtyard is also exactly what she needed — something to tend.

Mrs. Ng Chun-Ling

Daughter of resident — Happy Valley, HK

My main concern before visiting was visiting hours — I work irregular hours and I was not sure if I would be able to come often enough. The staff were clear that family visits are welcome without needing to book, which took away a lot of the guilt. The only thing I might wish for is a small café where families could sit with residents — but I understand the space is limited.

How Families Have Found Their Way Here

The Lau Family — Full Comfort Residence

The Situation

Mr. Lau, 81, had been living alone in Sheung Wan since his wife passed. His children — both working full time — noticed that meals were becoming irregular and that the flat needed more maintenance than he could manage. They were not looking for a care home; they wanted him somewhere sociable and well-kept.

What Changed

Mr. Lau began with the full comfort arrangement in January 2025. His welcome host, who shares his interest in Chinese chess, arranged for a regular game in the courtyard. Within six weeks he had joined a small group that plays most mornings. His daughter says he sounds different on the phone — more present in the conversation.

Five Months On

"He has gained a little weight, which the doctor is pleased about. He asks us not to come too often at mealtimes because it disrupts the rhythm of the table — which we took as a good sign." — Mr. Lau's son, April 2025.

The Pang Family — Dining & Garden Arrangements

The Situation

Mrs. Pang, 77, is active and independent but lives in a high-rise flat without any outdoor access. Her family wanted her to have proper meals and a garden to walk in without requiring her to give up her own home, where she feels settled.

What Changed

Mrs. Pang comes to Tin Lok each morning for the garden walk, stays for lunch and the afternoon tea, and returns to her flat in the evening. She has made friends among the full residents and is considering expanding her arrangement, though she is in no rush.

Three Months On

"The arrangement suits her perfectly because it gives her the community and the outdoor time she was missing, without taking away her independence. We didn't know this option existed." — Mrs. Pang's daughter, May 2025.
